I really need different ratings for quality vs enjoyment, but since there is only one I’m going to split the difference.

I liked the theme of “what is love?” that  was threaded throughout the book, how Leni’s definition changed over time, but too much of the day-to-day felt like an “I am very tough” circlejerk. Plus all the right-wing crackpot rambling; I spent the entire read dreading the next book club meeting and having to listen to “Mad Earl has a point” from privileged suburban retirees.

0% surprised that the author’s family has a vacation lodge business in Alaska. Suffice it to say, this book makes me never want to step foot in the state.

This story sucks you in from the very beginning. I found myself going through the whole gambit of emotions. I could picture the people and the places clearly in my mind and when it ended I found myself missing Lenny and Matthew and the whole cast of characters.

Absolutely gutted! This was the first time in a long time that I was scared to keep reading because I didn’t know if I could handle something bad happening to my favorite characters. I had such a visceral reaction to this book, at one point yelling, “F**k you,” while listening in the car and could not put it down.

This book was a rollercoaster! Like one of those rollercoasters where you’re just moving along and then it suddenly hits with a sharp bend or drop! One second I was angry, then I was happy and in the next instant, I was sad! I still have tears drying on my face as I write this!

The characters in this story were complex and beautifully written. The exploration into Ernt’s struggles with PTSD and the effect that it had on his family was both heartbreaking and maddening. I was so angry with Cora for allowing Leni to stay in that toxic environment, and, even worse, for holding her responsible for her father’s actions. This book does an amazing job of portraying the complexities of an abusive relationship and making you feel all the conflicting emotions of the different people involved.

Despite the sometimes poor choices of her mother, Leni’s love for Cora shone through and was a beautiful aspect of the story. So too was the relationship between Leni and Matthew. All they wanted was a loving, safe home and I’m so glad they were able to find that within each other.

I’m so glad I read this, and it is definitely something I would recommend readers who love books about nature, familial bonds, love of all kinds and the struggle to survive in harsh environments
