This book actually broke my heart several times.
The characters, setting, everything felt so real that it seemed like I was reading a memoir. Raw emotion, tension that turned the pages for me. I cried for, I hated, I loved each character. The ferocious beauty of the Alaskan wilderness cut through each page. It truly keeps only the strongest alive.
I dont want to spoil the story, but will say that domestic abuse is a main plotline, and it's honestly written.
Not quite 5 stars because towards the end it did pass the point of believability for myself, but it is a novel, not memoir, I need to remember...still definitely worth the read. Highly recommend.

went back and forth on this at a couple points but this sucked me in and the last three hours had me SOBBING. WEEPING. I have mixed feelings abt the ending but the discussion of grief rly got to me. I understand the point of the arrest at the end but it felt incomplete and not as well written as the rest, then the ending was almost too happy? Idk like I was crying but also it felt a bit incongruous.

Ugh, reading this book was agonizing. Riveting, loved the setting. A little frustrating in the middle, with a lot of 'JUST LEAVE ALREADY!' shouting being done by me. Ending was heart-wrenching. Thought the courtroom scene at the end was a wee bit emotionally manipulative and that the faux-happily ever after could've used a bit more explaining. I wanted to understand exactly what condition Matthew was in at the end, and what led them to think they could pursue a life together because I didn't get that feeling up to that point. Still - was a huge fan of the writing, loved the setting. Looking forward to reading more from Hannah, already put a hold on The Nightingale.
