I have very mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed the overall story, as well as having a protagonist who is an active part of a Native American/First Nations community. For me, the writing style and some of the conversations felt very juvenile (more so than I would expect from a YA novel). Almost of the discussion of illegal drugs in the story made me think of an after school special. There was also a rape, which I imagine was to illustrate the high amount of violence towards Native women, but felt like it was tossed in for shock value.

Loved the characters, the plot, and learning more about this community. Such a great read and a powerhouse of a lead.

This YA read is one you should definitely pick up. Daunis is the main character of the story, who doesn’t feel like she truly fits in. When a couple of students start dying of meth overdoses in town, Daunis is asked to join in an investigation of her community, one that can change the community forever.

This story was a very fast read for me because it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I really enjoyed the Ojibwe language throughout the story and really liked the cultural practices thrown in as well. I felt like I learned a lot about the tribal community, while also reading the fictional story.

When I heard others describe this book I went in thinking it was something else which was great because it was so much better then it’s description. There were moments that made me feel anger and others that filled me with joy. I love when a book makes you feel all the feels.

Personal rating scale
1= dnf/ awful read
2= the concept was creative or nostalgic but not very well executed
3= solid read. I liked it but can’t think of anyone I’d recommend the book to
4= I really liked the book and can think of people I’d recommend it to
5= loved the book. Can’t stop thinking about it. Would be willing to read it again
