I really loved the book, up until the part where I stopped.
Spoiler I totally understand that books can't all have a happy ending, and that this ending--had I read it--probably wouldn't be *un*happy, but I'm disappointed that that's how it went. Yeah, I was surprised, but I wouldn't have read the book knowing the ending. And that kinda ruins it for me.

First half of the book gets 5 stars. Third quarter gets 4 stars. Last 6% gets a DNF 🤷

I really enjoyed it overall, but the pacing was hard. It took a long time to read because I kept falling into slumps.

What a page-turner! I needed to know more. I appreciated the story's invitation into the lives of indigenous folks on a reservation and learning more about Anishnaabe language and culture. I found
Spoiler her brother being involved in the drug ring predictable because Daunis idolized him the whole time, even when he was evidently shitty in some ways. I also found Daunis's experience of grief to fall flat partially, but I'm no expert on how people process grief. It's just that as a reader I didn't really feel her grief very strongly, or find it particularly sad when Lily died, since we barely got to know her beforehand. I also really wanted to find out what was going on with the Little People but they never reappeared.

Overall I very much enjoyed the mystery at the core of the story. At least in audiobook form there was a few times I got confused as to what had been actually said/what was just in Daunis' head as fantasy. However, the audiobook was excellent for all more unique pronunciations both with being in the UP and with introducing what to most readers is an unfamiliar language. I will say the narrator did mess up the pronunciation of pastys (coming from someone who spent 4 years in the UP and who's best friend is a UP local) pronouncing them the way you would pasties - which are very different.

For me this was a fun and worthwhile read and while I had inklings about who might be behind the mystery, there were too many moving parts for me to guess before the culprits were revealed.

i went into this book with complete opposite expectations to what i got. there were many times within the first half when i felt like putting it down solely because of the writing style. it just felt too basic for me i just didnt like it. but when the pace and plot started picking up it got better and easier to read but it still just wasnt a book i would have picked up based on the plot. i just loved the cover lol. so really it just comes down to my own personal opinion but it wasnt the best for me so its an average 3/5 stars.

The representation in this book is so amazing and the fact that it doesn't hude the dark side of their community is amazing. It doesn't hude real things that gcould happen while investigating and it was sad. Also it was funny because daunis hated Jamie one chapter then. Hated him the other. then lived him again💀
