The premise of the story excited me and made me eager to read it, but the style felt like a rough first draft and was tedious to read, the characters are terrible and just plain miserable to read and the queer couple read like a stereotyped version of a sexist 50s marriage (older butch woman who undermines and disrespects her younger, femme partner, the one who carried the pregnancy and who is seen by the other two as less than), just as a few examples without getting into how they treat the child.
What probably felt more triggering for me was when the femme lesbian was pretty aware that she was being psychologically abused, so she thought about taking the baby and running away, but she thinks something along the lines of "and where could I go? I have nowhere to go, and I love my partner too much", which is 101 on abuse victim thinking.
I've read opinions of people who loved this book but weren't too keen on the ending, so I was curious if it'd be the other way around for me, seeing how I'm hating it. Sadly, I can't bring myself to keep reading, the style is too bad and the characters too triggering. Maybe I'll give it another chance in a few years if I feel I can stomach it, but right now I can't bring myself to keep reading it.
