I really enjoyed this book although I found I was putting it down and picking it up a lot more than usual so it took longer to read, nothing kept me hooked long enough to read for long periods of time for the first half of the book.
But it turned out to be so twisty and absolutely full of creepy revelations. I was just left gobsmacked on many occasions and I don't think my head could take anymore by the end.
I honestly couldn't guess any of the big reveals, everything I believed throughout reading was well and truly proven wrong. And everytime something happened I was instantly taken back to something that had been said or had happened earlier on which was a major clue and thought "AGH HOW DIDN'T I SEE THAT?!!"
Again, I really enjoyed this book and its mental health representations were spot on. I liked the writing, the plot, everything! It was just slow at times in the beginning, but the rest of the book completely made up for that. I can't wait to read more of Jensen's books.

Laura is in de rouw en begint wanhopig te worden. Haar man is plotseling overleden maar de verzekering wil niets uitkeren totdat officieel is vastgesteld dat zijn dood een ongeluk was, ze kan de huur van hun huis niet meer betalen en haar bloemenzaak staat op de rand van een faillissement. Oak Leaf Organics, een leefgemeenschap, biedt haar en haar dochter hulp en onderdak aan en Laura gaat hier dankbaar op in, ondanks haar slechte onderbuikgevoel. Wanneer er vreemde dingen gebeuren op de boerderij en binnen de Familie wil Laura er weg, maar haar 17-jarige dochter Tilly is onder de indruk van leider Alex en wil niet vertrekken. Langzaam maar zeker wordt duidelijk waarom Laura en Tilly zijn toegelaten tot de gemeenschap en blijkt ook dat de leden ze niet zomaar zullen laten gaan.
De knallende proloog maakt dat je direct benieuwd bent naar het verhaal en in de eerste hoofdstukken leer je Laura en Tilly kennen. Problemen stapelen zich op, Tilly heeft het moeilijk op school, ze wordt buitengesloten en contact met familie is verbroken. De handreiking van de Familie lijkt een oplossing voor hun problemen, maar wat te mooi lijkt om waar te zijn, is dat vaak ook. De gemeenschap lijkt te functioneren als een soort sekte en de sfeer wordt steeds grimmiger.
In korte hoofdstukken lees je vanuit de perspectieven van Laura, Tilly en later ook Alex. Het verhaal heeft een duistere sfeer en iedereen die voorkomt in het boek lijkt geheimen te hebben. Je voelt dat er onheil in de lucht hangt, maar dat leidt niet direct tot concrete gebeurtenissen. De schrijfstijl is vlot en je vliegt door het boek heen, maar het middenstuk vond ik wat te lang duren en ik voelde me niet volledig verbonden met de personages, ik snapte hun beweegredenen niet altijd en vooral Laura lijkt erg naïef. Wat meer uitwerking van de karakters had ik fijn gevonden. Je blijft lang gissen, totdat in het laatste deel van het boek wending op wending volgt. Het slotstuk is een explosieve finale die, hoewel niet alle onthullingen volledig geloofwaardig zijn, het middenstuk grotendeels goedmaakt!

This was such an anticipated read for 2019 and was definitely worth the wait!
I absolutely loved the concept of this plot with the interpretations and meanings that in turn turned out to be something very different than what I originally thought!
This book had me gripped from the first page and was constantly surprised as the book developed! I love that I thought I had guessed where it was going and then right out the blew something else would completely shock me!
I throughly enjoyed this read and would highly recommend to any psychological thriller reader or even if not! It’s a must read book!!

Really enjoyable thriller, love the use of Welsh language, Alex’s chapters are very creepy and unsettling, and the switch between Laura and Tilly chapters is really powerful at highlighting the ‘two sides of the same coin’. Loved the twists, even the ones I’d thought I’d worked out were only half solved before the reveal!
