going into this book blindly, i thought that this book would be a cute, light romance. i was soooo wrong. this book was SO addicting like i could NOT put it down. this book taught me a lot…especially to never judge people because u litterally dont know their story. the way that it was written i felt such emotions for each character and became so attached to them. i also felt that this book had a lot of racism in it and i’m not sure if the author did that to show the racism in the past, or because of some other reason..jus confused ab that.

The book had potential but I could have done without the bad attempts at discussing race (Eleanor’s POC friends talking in a way that a white author obviously thinks they’d talk, the audiobook authors doing an Asian accent for his mom, the description of his mom as a china doll). The storyline about being in an abusive household was the most compelling and the book would have been better if this Midwestern white woman author didn’t try to explore race relations when she knows nothing and it comes across super cringey and racist.

A good, well written story but the amount of family trauma was too much for me.

Spoiler THE ENDING OMGGGGGG who let the author do this :( come on the book was so incredibly amazing and it wasn't another teen novel that would never actually happen in real life. minus some of the '80s stuff, it could happen today. the ending frustrated me a little because they could've kept their love going, and park tried really hard. you could almost feel his heart breaking with each and every letter with no reply. Its not like the books where one character dies and then no one can do anything about it, eleanor could have tried.... ahh it was still so good!
