I picked it up without much thought so it took me a while to figure out that each short story is based on specific Kabuki/Rakubo/folklore stories. It is entertaining as is, but probably a lot more enjoyable if you are familiar with the original folklore referenced.

Smartening Up 3.5/5
This was weird, but carried a good message.

The Peony Lanterns 2/5
I found this boring.

My Superpower 1/5
I have eczema and I found this somewhat cringe.

Quite a Catch 3/5
This was ok.

The Jealous Type 2/5
Again, this was ok.

Where the Wild Ladies Are
I’m bored, I’ve had enough.

I liked the first story enough and then it just went downhill from there imo. I found there was a lot of telling not showing, and this made it a boring read for me.

Fun, flirty, feminist stories that weave together in a gorgeous retelling of Japanese folklore. I loved the blending of supernatural with real. Often I didn’t know where one stopped and the other began. The characters surprised me and provoked unexpected reactions in me, constantly making me second guess my judgments and prejudices. I loved it.

What a strangely simple and comforting and weird book. All the women were so resolute and matter of fact. It was lovely.
