A tender, understated second collection about fatherhood, babyhood and love. Gives the reader small glimpses into the midnight world of the under slept new parent, and into the vulnerability of loving a child. It's a meditation into what it means to be open to the world, and specifically to the experiences of learning to care for a baby. Campbell uses short, generally unrhymed poems, which feel very complete in themselves, but combine to form something like a litany. This was the first collection I read in 2020, and it's one I enjoyed taking slowly and rereading. My only criticism is that at times the poems are so understated they lose their emotional impact for me, and I want a little more depth. But it's beautiful, and an excellent companion on long dark hours when you can't sleep.
