There are beautiful lines here and there, but otherwise, this was mostly nonsensical to me. The metaphors were atrocious most of the time in my opinion and I got nothing out of this. It was trying so hard to be philosophical, it got low-key obnoxious. And for what? This all will fall out of my head in the next few days, that's how unimpactful it was to me.

Much like paintings and poetry, I think you can feel when art isn't for you. And this book wasn't for me.

Would’ve been higher if it didn’t say her father’s spirit ejaculated into her so much

Lots of lovely sentiments and ideas, it felt like I was in a dream. The concepts got a bit hard to follow toward the last third of the book and I found it not as elegant as the first two thirds. The ending was also quite abrupt considering the exploration of Mira’s unsure journey was quite in-depth earlier in the story.

Pure Colour was like drinking a potion that left you perplexed, curious and in a bodily state of wonder. It was so beautiful and bizarre, crisp and hazy. Heti carefully presented the full breadth of the emotional existence of being in a way that I can only think of as sleep talking, a trance like state producing ramblings with traces of pure truth and tenderness. It felt fresh and sung to the difficult times that existing currently involves. Pure colour has a place in my heart!

I wanted to like this book but I just couldn't get into it. I got three quarters through and then decided that there's too many books in the world that I want to read to read ones I don't get anything out of. I can see what Heti was trying to do, and I'm sure there's lots of people who will love this book and relate to it. For me it felt disjointed, and some of the metaphors felt like they were added for shock value rather than meaning. Maybe it would have been more effective as prose poetry.
