While the Wingfeather Saga started out a bit rough for me, I have been enjoying it as the story has progressed. This entry took a bit to get through as we're reading it together as a family and between certain sports and holidays it has been hard to read it as much as we would like. However, we finally finished the book and left with the last book in the series to go.

Monster in the Hollows picks up with the Wingfeather family finally making it to the Hollows, one of the only places left that isn't under the control of Nag the Nameless and his Fangs. What the Wingfeather's find in the Hollows isn't quite the welcome they might have expected. With Calmar's condition the family is viewed with suspicion and even hatred in some regards.

This makes for an interesting story as the danger doesn't necessarily come from Nag and the Fangs, but from the supposed good guys and allies. This danger may only be in the form of bullying at times, but behind that may be something more sinister and dangerous.

Overall I thought it was a good story of how good people can make the wrong assumptions, how outward appearances can be deceiving, and the easy complacency that any of us can find if we thing that we're personally safe and that all of the problems come from outside. While the book series started off a bit goofy and very slow paced, I've found that these later books have been much more enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing how the series wraps up in book four.

Okay this book *shines*. I absolutely love the relationship between the two brother and how we see most scenes through Janner’s eyes - lots of echoes of Peter and Edmund and the dynamic they had at the beginning of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, but in much longer form and more deeply explored. I can’t wait to finish the series.

My one wish is that the sister had also been a protagonist. It’s clear at this point that, like the mother and grandfather, she is a static side character, and is not developing because she is basically already perfect. I don’t mind a focus on the brothers’ relationship but wish there had been more of her in the story.

Just when I thought the Wingfeather Saga couldn't get any better, 'The Monster in the Hollows' delivers a moving, deep, and emotional story. The relationships among the Igiby family are given deeper meaning in this book allowing the reader to become even more attached to these characters. Again (must I say it?), Peterson writes with the style of one of the best writers ever! His writing is descriptive, clear, and crisp —adding an even greater dimension to this already amazing novel. Surprise, suspense, heartbreak, and betrayal are all employed to construct an ending that will pull on your heartstrings and your tears! Don't miss this fabulous fantasy!
