This has a lot of potential, but ultimately fell short for me. I really liked the story and the revenge plot, but the writing is lacking and could be better, and badly needs some punctuation. There were just walls of big paragraphs that could have easily broken down into smaller paragraphs. It made the reading odd for me and it took some getting used to.

I was expecting some pretty explicit torture, but this didn’t really deliver. It was straight forward, with very little detail and not much wow or shock factor. Which makes this not so dark in my opinion and was a let down for me. Having an FMC that knows how to skin and butcher animals but not expand on that with detailed scenes was disappointing.

The sex and spice scenes were okay, nothing I haven’t read before.

Now for what I did like: the characters! Jen is awesome and I love her and her humor. Brandon is the kind of guy I’d love to have as a best friend and Evan is a sweetheart. I really enjoyed the humor and the type of conversations the characters had. There was some decent character development too.

Also this cover is awesome!

With nothing but loss in her life, Jenevive is trying to get on with her life. With twists and turns, lies and betrayals, can she find her way?

Bizarre. Wild. Crazy. One moment you think you know what’s happening and then BOOM! I thought I had so many things figured out but turns out I knew nothing.

I was extremely intrigued with Jenevive from the very moment she was introduced. She was fun, hilarious, and a strong lead. Her secrets shook me once they were out in the open.

The action in this book was delivered. The spice in this book is perfection. When everything started to kick off, I couldn’t put it down.

The only thing that kept me from giving this story 5 stars was the slow start. There were times I was skimming and had to push myself through. There were parts of the story that felt like filler conversations. For example, there were times when the story focused on describing stuff that happened or the way the setting is, that to me took away from the plot. There were moments where the character would tell Alexa to play a certain playlist or a certain song. It wasn’t necessarily that the mention of the song or playlist was the problem, but it was repetitive over time.

With that being said, you just have to hold on and keep going because I promise it’s worth it.

Either way, this book was a good debut novel for JS Mercier and I was honored to read it. I will say I’m just going to sit over here patiently waiting for the next one. If you’re looking for twists and turns, slow burns, and a wild ride this is the book for you.

*I received an eARC from the author for an honest review*
This book was a pretty fun read. I liked the MC and the fact that she's like a female Dexter. Jen isn't the type to be a damsel in distress. If you screw with her family, she will kill you. Jen is a badass and I loved her.

For a second, this felt like a reverse harem (the MC makes a reference to this). I was actually surprised at where the story went. There were plenty of twists to keep me guessing.

If you're a fan of spice, then this is for you. I personally feel like there may have been a little too many spicy scenes, but it's a matter of preference.

I loved the scenes with Jen in her workroom. I'd say those and the bookstore were my favorites.

I'm looking forward to the next book. I hope a certain someone gets what's coming to them.

Wow! I just have to start with wow! This was so much more than what I was expecting. It was my first dark romance book and I couldn’t put it down. I finished it in a day and being a longer read (495 pages) shows that it was THAT GOOD! The way the author brought in humor along with steamy romance and thrilling dark suspense was just amazing! I loved the writing and how the plot twists continued to pop up when I least expected them to. The story line was so well played out and the characters are ones I definitely won’t forget. The ending was perfect (no spoilers) I didn’t see it coming and it was a perfect way to “end” the story line for this one! I can’t wait until her other books come out in the future because they will for sure be on my bookshelf! This is definitely a must read!

I received this e-arc from the author for a review and what can I say! That ending! Just wow.

I found Jen a very likable MC and admired her strength and courage, add in her snarky sarcastic attitude and you got one badass female main character. I loved all the dark twists and being kept on my toes. When you thought you figured something out…BAM something else happens that makes you question what you thought you figured out. The beginning was slow but once things started getting into things, my did it do a whole 360! The characters are well developed as well as the story being in great detail that you found yourself immersed in the story unfolding around you. Anyone who knows me , knows I do love a good cult vibe book, especially a religious cult. I will admit I would to learn more about the compound and the corrupt morals of Uncle Patrick.

The spice level was just perfect and written so well that it wasn’t too cringe. The chemistry between Jen and Evan was off the charts. Evan was such a loveable character and had so much depth him.

I honestly can’t wait for the second book and reading more from Jen and the gang.
