While I enjoyed the first book, and it was clear throughout the book that sexual assault was a continued theme, this book was incredibly graphic in it's depiction and description of it. I felt that unlike in the first book, in this book the reactions of the characters and their emotions were unrealistic. It stopped feeling like a genuine portrayal of grooming and sexual assault and more like a perverse consumption of queer suffering. I tried to push through hoping it would get better, but given how much of the plot was centered around this, and that I came to dislike the characters after their continued unrealistic reactions towards each other, I couldn't manage to do so.

This book wasn’t a bad book, however it felt like the author lost sight of the themes of The Fever King sacrificing the world and the “bigger picture” to shift the reader’s attention on characters. It wasn’t bad, I just wish the plot was flashed out more.

I also wasn’t sold on the romance between Dara and Noah, it felt unnecessary.
