Awww, I love it so much. So cute. I would have loved this as a kid. I loved this as an adult.

Princess Magnolia may look and act the part of a proper princess, but she's really the Princess in Black who single handedly saves goats from monsters. She's always been able to keep her secret, but now she's almost on the point of being discovered! What's a princess to do?

In my quest to find another engaging read aloud for my 4 1/2 year old I stumbled upon a recommendation for this series, and it doesn't disappoint. Short chapters, colorful pictures, and multiple books in the series! Sign us up!!

I love all of the Shannon Hale YA books that I’ve read. I was super excited to find this younger chapter series for my daughter. She absolutely loved this book and devoured it this afternoon until she finished it this evening.

This is just one step up in terms of reading level from early readers like Frog and Toad. The illustrations are adorable, bright and likely to capture the imagination of the target audience, the font is large and easy to read, and the illustrations are interspersed with text. The plot is nothing that hasn't been done before (I'm a sweet princess! Now I'm a bandit and no one recognises me with this mask!") but there's some humor and adventure to keep a child's interest.

A bit sad that my book got in a bit damaged. :( I don't know what they did there where I bought it, but there are big, deep folds in some of the pages and the bookwrapper is also a bit dented/folded. Come on people, I buy the book from your place, make sure it gets to my place in one piece.

Now for the review.

I heard about this book through twitter several months ago and I knew I just had to get this. I like princesses, but I love them even more when they are kick-ass and do awesome stuff like defending their kingdom and their people!

And my oh my, our princess in this book is just awesome, on one side being a prim and proper lady, drinking chocolate and eating scones, on the other side being a kick-ass heroine. She apparently can balance them quite well, given how the Duchess had a hard time finding anything that wasn't part of her perfect princess personality.

I loved the monsters, they aren't really scary, more goofy and stupid. Oh and fluffy. Now if only they didn't eat goats or such.
Monster smell goats, thinks about why he can't go up, forgot reason why and goes up. Same goes for when he goes down, instantly forgetting why upstairs is dangerous, I can see him coming back again and again.

The illustrations are gorgeous and I really enjoyed them, they made the story even better and made it come alive.

I see this will have more books? I do hope so, since I would love to see more of our princess, maybe a book about how she came to be a superhero, since there is always a backstory about such a thing!

All in all I would really recommend this book. Children and adults will really love this magical and kick-ass book!

A favorite read aloud series for bedtime in our house! Monsters aren't too scary and Princess Magnolia is a quality character for my girls to emulate.

3.5 stars. This book skirts the line between beginner reader and first chapter book quite nicely. Plenty of goofy moments. I imagine that this would be a fun book to read out loud.

Read this out loud with my children. They loved it to pieces. So much that I'm going to opt to round my rating up to four stars.

I received a copy of The Princess in Black by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale with illustrations from LeUyen Pham from Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for an honest review.

The Princess in Black is a young readers chapter book series in which we are introduced to Princess Magnolia who has a secret identity - the Princess in Black. Princess Magnolia is usually found in pink and absolutely perfect. But when crisis occurs, usually because of goat-eating monsters, she will change out her flouncy dress and into her disguise to go solve the problem. In this story, Princess Magnolia needs to also deal with the suspicions of Duchess Wigtower who is determined to find out Princess Magnolia's secret as she believes that everyone has something they don't want others to know.

What a cute and fun start to this chapter book series. I really enjoyed the antics and word play happening in the story. I love the concept of the character - that Princess Magnolia is both happy in her flouncy dresses and also playing the hero, fighting monsters. What a great message for young readers to not be contained by one idea of who they can be.
