Listened to this one on Audible. It was almost funny that as the story went on there were things that I was surprised at, that didn't feel appropriate in today's day and age. Then I realized that this book was originally released in 1986.

I love Nora Roberts's writing, always have, and this was no exception. There were some things that didn't age well but, all in all, it was still a suspenseful, romantic story told extremely well.

I don't recall reading this before which is ironic with an amnesia plot.

i liked the beginning but then , even though the book wasn’t that long, the events were dragged out. nothing was happening, fmc wasn’t remembering anything. i didn’t like how her father and the mmc used her and it was brushed off.

i liked fmc. she didn’t hold back.

“I'll go over my schedule with Janet Smithers in the morning. Then I'd like to go over it with you. Whatever it is I'm committed to do, I want to do. Even if it's spending hours shopping or sitting in a beauty parlor."
"Is that how you think you spend your time?"
"It's a possibility. I'm rich, aren't I?"
"Yes."
"Well, then..." With a shrug, she trailed off. "Tonight, before dinner, I lay in the bath and wondered. Actually, I thought of you and wondered."
Very slowly he dipped his hands in his pockets. "Did you?”

i didn’t like how often he reminisced about fmc when she was 16 while he was in his 20s at that time.

My first, and likely last Nora Roberts book. It was very easy to read. I think Roberts is a great writer and great with characters. Not so great at the mystery aspect. I figured out who done it roughly 90 pages in. It was very obvious and uninteresting. It was oddly deep and nice sometimes, but then it wasn't as well. All the touching felt very unnatural (hands, shoulders, hair), but maybe because I'm not a touchy person. It's necessary of course for the kind of books she writes, but I always felt weird about it. Could just be me. Others have said this is very dated, but I didn't really get that feeling except for the fact that all the men smoked quite a lot indoors and it was seen as an attractive quality.

There was such a time gap between when I started this book to when I finished it I feel as if I cannot give a proper review; however, if you love Roberts then you'll enjoy this book. I nearly guessed who was at fault, but not quite.

ZERO stars

Roberts may be hugely popular, and more power to her, but this book is just terrible. The writing is hackneyed; the plot is contrived, makes little sense and doesn’t flow; the characters are one-dimensional; the dialogue is inane.

The premise is that Princess Gabriella Bisset, Princess Royal of Cordina (a principality with a striking resemblance to Monaco), has been kidnapped but managed to escape with her life, but with no memory at all of who she is, who took her, how they did it, where she was kept, or how she escaped. She doesn’t recognize her father, the Crown Prince Armand, or her brothers, much less the servants or heads of state she regularly comes in contact with. Enter Reeve MacGee, an American whose father was a friend of Prince Armand, and who is a “retired” cop (or is that a CIA operative?). Armand asks him to come help protect Brie until her kidnappers can be captured. To explain his constant presence at her side, they concoct a fake engagement to throw the media off the real story.

My favorite quote comes on page 172 of the large print edition I read. Princess Brie is speaking:
”I want this to be over,”she said … All I could say to that was, ME, TOO!

This is the first Nora Roberts book I’ve read. I think it’s the last, also.
