The first work of Tolkien I read that’s independent of the Fabulous Four (the Hobbit & LOTR). Perhaps Tolkien’s most tragic and Greek-inspired tale - the kind of sad that hides itself under beauty until it’s too late and you’re ensnared, making the kind of downtrodden face that snags you a few double-takes from strangers in a coffeeshop.

“A man that flies from his fear may find that he has only taken a short cut to meet it.”

The Children of Húrin is such a sad story and still so good. I enjoyed reading this more than Beren and Lúthien since this was more of an story and not many different versions of one text. I like how much more detailed the longer version is compared to the one in The Silmarillion. I can really recommend this book to Tolkien fans!

This is the first Tolkien book that I've completely through. It reads like an ancient epic, one that requires the reader to have some idea of the stories that lead up to the present installment. It definitely is not the same type of tale as the Ring trilogy. This is a far more complex, tragic and darker story. Readers should definitely read the other 'unfinished' Tolkien tales before tackling this one.
