second book in the Joe Pickett series. I enjoyed revisiting this game warden as he investigates the latest trouble in the countryside of Wyoming. C.J. writes great side characters in Joe’s wife and older daughter.

Eco-terrorism of the sort mentioned in this book was a new topic to me. I know the sort of tactics employed by Greenpeace and other such groups, but what Stewie and the others in this book were up to were more than a little n the extreme side. It makes sense though. Given the clash between the old and new schools of thought on how to use the land, it makes sense that even more violence was called for.
What I also liked was that Joe ultimately took a back seat to the ending. I liked seeing Stewie being the one who had to make the hard decision. After all, it was him, his wife, and his friends the Trust went after. It’s only right he be the one to press the button as it were. Joe may have facilitated it (and gotten off one hell of a lucky shot), but Stewie got the last word in.
I also like his status at the end is unknown. It makes him like an ecological assassin like Jason Bourne. Cue the Moby track.
