I love the Nausicaa movie and I went into this book expecting more of the same, but the manga is so much more dense and complex. Princess Kushana was a fairly one-note invader in the movie, but in the manga she’s a conflicted strategist fighting both an external war and a struggle to survive the intrigues of her family. She becomes an interesting foil to Nausicaa’s earnest Chosen One: both fighting to preserve and lead their homelands, but through very different methods. We also get to see more of the beliefs and motivations of the other cultures neighboring Nausicaa’s valley.
My only complaint isn’t even really against the book at all but more with manga as a whole, and it’s that this work deserves to be in full color. The wildlife, the ships, the clouds, the toxic forest, everything is so incredibly detailed that black&white just doesn’t fully do it justice.

Really beautiful art, very dynamic. Almost as good as the movie, although I liked the changes the movie made better than the original. So far not enough of the overarching narrative yet to know how much I like it overall.
More of a me problem: I appreciate the untranslated sound effects because they were part of the original art and blend in an interesting way. Unfortunately it also makes it harder to read when I’m constantly needing to refer to the translations in the back.
