Poe, in all his brilliance, gives me a headache every time.
The vortex of thoughtless folly into which I there so immediately and so recklessly plunged, washed away all but the froth of my past hours, engulfed at once every solid or serious impression, and left to memory only the veriest levities of a former existence.
If I hadn't been spoiled on the ending, I probably would have enjoyed this more.

After reading The Scarlet Letter, reading Edgar Allan Poe was so much more enjoyable than when I read the three other short stories before. His writing is... chef's kiss. It is not comboluted or too detailed and repetitive. Besides, I always enjoy the topic of the doppelgänger, as I did when reading Der Sandmann by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
