A bit formulaic, but still a great story. However, I was a bit thrown off at many points. The story telling style, the magic, the alternate world... everything was your standard high fantasy. Except for the modern tech like phones, guns, and a palace security system. Those things were brought up infrequently enough that the story could easily have done without them. I was taken away by this fantasy world until a gun or security system went off, at which point I was jarred out of the story for a bit. However, I liked the story enough to want the sequel, so I'm giving it 3.5 rounded up.

Predicted the ending in the first 2 chapters and the main character was not very likeable. Ok book. DNF.

MAJOR SPOILER WARNING

i really did give the book the benefit of the doubt for most of the book, but the plot felt really contained, despite there being pretty crazy stakes it felt like they were repeated into our face to the point where we were like “yeah we get it good job”

which really brings me to the next thing: it was like the book was written by a sixth grader sometimes. everything was sort of in our face all the time, there was no building up to the things and letting the reader understand and feel those emotions and danger.

so, 3 ish stars. i liked the plot and idea of it all to keep going, though the plot twists were a little too comical and way too many to make any of the plot twists interesting by the end. i didn’t know that lord banyon was her dad until she told elias and i was like “oh” because there were so many it didn’t matter anymore. that one plot twist was just not very good, didn’t have build up or impact like the jericho killed her dad plot twist which was also completely undermined by the fact that her dad isn’t her dad.
