the lessons in this were simple, and his original speech for the graduating class of 2014 at the university of texas was well said. but i felt as if he didn’t really need to make it into a book. some of the stories didn’t connect (in my opinion) to the lesson he was trying to teach. i wouldn’t recommend the book to anyone, but i’d definitely recommend the original speech.

Errm. Not for me. I went in fully expecting to be inspired. I *do* think you should make your bed!
But ... like, it’s not even accurate to say the advice boils down to things like “don’t give up,” “don’t judge people by how they look,” “hard work pays off.” The advice just *is* that, full stop. There is not more to it than that.
(And it ignores completely the possibility that there are times that giving up might be for the best or you work hard and it doesn’t pay off. There is no advice beyond that.)

Just ok

I respect and am grateful for the author’s service but this book is kind of bland. It’s good life lessons that everyone knows, and a quick read.

Great, short little read written by a Navy SEAL who detailed some of his experiences in that program, and the strategies he used to overcome obstacles he faced. The idea that the small things quickly compound in our heads is very true; getting up and making your bed means you've accomplished something! And if that is all you complete that day...well at least you completed something! The lesson to persevere in the little things so that we might prove our readiness and grit to tough it through far larger challenges with the Lord's help is admirable indeed. Highly recommend giving this short, easy-to-read, conversational, inspiring book a quick flip through!
