I cannot believe how much I love this!!! It's so freaking good!!
Esofi is a new favourite character. She is soft and kind but a total goddamned badass at the same time. She will make an amazing queen and I would just continuously bow before her because she's that amazing. Also love a plus-size main character, even if she's a little self-conscious about it.
I really loved everything about this. The characters were really great, Esofi and Adale were individuals and had such a sweet chemistry between them. I also loved the clear differences in their friends/ladies in waiting, it further developed their characterization.
The world building was honestly phenomenal. I am so interested in all of the gods and goddesses of this world and all the little 'cults' within each temple. It's all so fascinating.
Obviously my favourite thing in this book was the equality. It seemed liked everyone was pansexual and that was totally acceptable and normalized. No one cared if Esofi married a man or woman or neutroi. That's the other thing, the third gender neutroi - kind of non-binary - is again totally normal, there's even a neutroi god. Homophobia was not a thing in this world at all and I wanna live there.
I could honestly have read a whole 400+ page book about these characters but it was also a perfectly sized book. I am so excited for the rest of the series as it delves into more of the religious organizations.

I really, really wanted to love this book. The concept was super interesting and wonderful, but the execution just wasn’t there for me. I didn’t really click with the characters and the characters didn’t seem to click with each other. Some of the conversations felt stilted somehow. Like I understand that it’s fantasy, but I just kept thinking, “people don’t talk like that.” Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.
Again, love the concept. Didn’t like the execution.
