This was lovely--silly-whimsy--true, without any of the maudlin or overdrawn tack-ons that make a simple story treacly.

It's also brief enough to be read as a reader, and the illustrations are active, and spot-on. They show the story as the dialogue moves it.

I've yet to find a book by DiCamillo that doesn't shine in some way. Same here.

I challenge Kate DiCamillo to write something that isn't the actual best and/or cutest.

While I loved this book of short stories very VERY much, and am extremely thrilled to have something of this quality to add to our First Chapter section, and of course I adore all three individuals associated with it, and suspect that the five and dime store depicted in the first story is Pintchik's in Brooklyn... I was very surprised when my 4th grader, who is usually a vociferous fan of funny books, was kind of blah about this one. Turns out, he misinterpreted the rather aloof quality of Bink and Gollie's interactions, and thought that they did not like each other very much. Might be just a touch too subtle for some kids?

This is really funny. Bink and Gollie play off each other in a wonderful manner. A quick read and one that will make you laugh and touch you just a little.

Quite the vocabulary exposure for an early reader chapter book. Illustrations are fun and the friendship is a delight.
