I was genuinely surprised by how well this classic Dinosaur tale dates.

The female character at first is detailed in such a way that I was worried it was going to be an unending sexist slog but those expectations were turned on their head in a fantastic/believable way.

Plus there is a dog and any book where a good boy fights dem dinosaurs is a win in my books.

Admittedly the descriptions of the cave people have a few 'OH we're using that descriptor...yikes' but honestly that was the ONLY thing which for a pulp book this old, I was very surprised by.

I know the trilogy has been touted as being a single book split into three which I can see buut at the same time this story as short as it is, completely stands alone.

The descriptors of war being surprisingly unflinching and the characterization of the other German crew really set this book apart from my expectations going in.

Excited to read the rest of the trilogy.

Love these old sci-fi/fantasy/adventure yarns of Edgar Rice Burroughs. This one about the prehistoric island stumbled upon by a crew of a ship lost at sea.

This book was written in 1918 and takes place during World War I.

We have a u-boat lost at sea that stumbles across an island that is secluded and untouched by mankind and all environmental and evolutionary changes that have taken place over the past millions of years so our heroes are stuck on an island with dinosaurs, saber tooth tigers, primitive man and all kinds of other monsters.

This was not the first time I've read this novel but I didn't remember how slow it was at the start. It took almost a third of the way into the book before they ever reach the island.
Good action. Good characters (although dated).

So how to rate the book?
Because of the dated aspect of the novel my enjoyment was a 3 star book
BUT
For historical relevance (I can't even begin to count the number of movies, comics and books that were spun off the ideas in this novel) this is a 5+ star book.
So I'll average it out to 4 stars.

Because of the historical significance of the book and the author I would recommend this to most everyone.

I'd rather read the terms and conditions of a mobile app. I'm sure that'd be more interesting.
