I usually finish books like these in a sitting or two. In this case, I couldn't...

Unlikeable characters, unnecessarily romanized sentences and out of place storylines. The only saving grace was Dylan and Dabbu's love story.

A Doordarshan era romance, still captures the very essence of our lives! Beautifully told!

This is a hilarious purely Indian novel by Anuja Chauhan. Sort of Hinglish with the expressions and language but you can understand. The only problem that I had was to remember the long list of characters in the big family of Thakurs. The story is romantic at the same time touches some journalistic issues and freedom of expression with the background of anti Sikh riots. Don't read this book seriously expecting brilliant plot which is not the case. Better read this book if you are a person who likes Hindi movies and books with humours that are typically Indian. Anyway this was my first read of 2021. Not that disappointing but still it should have been lot better with the Debjani and Dylan romance. Their relationships kept going up and down with all the family mess and an article issue. It wasn't that convincing with the languages and abuse he throws at her unnecessarily.

I had to go back and check when the book was published before I gave it a one star. 2013 wasn't that long ago! The author used the word 'delectable' to describe the daughters in the first page of the novel - and I was immediately put off. I kept reading because a podcast I like had recommended the book, and then I just kept coming across these racist, islamophobic references that I couldn't believe I was reading. Was the fact that novel was supposedly set in the 80s the reasoning behind this being acceptable?! There was literally no indication of the time period (and definitely not from the manner in which the characters spoke and interacted) expect for all the Campa Cola they kept drinking. What a disappointment, I was hoping for fun light book to read - definitely didn't find that here.
