I just closed this book and I want to cry because I feel so much.

I admit the first 20% or so I had to flow on vibes alone, accepting the large amount of lore I did not fully understand. If you put a gun to my head and tell me to explain the details of this world I probably still couldn't. I wish I could. The setting is so intricate and unique and engaging. Perhaps a bit oversaturated with unique ideas, about everything ever, packed into too small a space.

Another thing I'll admit is that the near constant action, turning from one crisis, one fight scene into another, was a bit exhausting. Not much breathing room here, nope. I had to put down the book at 2am last night and it gave me dreams so action packed and confusing I woke up further mentally tired lol.

ALL THAT SAID.

The characters are the heart of this book. All of them. The main ones and the side ones, all of them felt so real. The amount of personality fitted into any one side character could equal a whole casts' worth of any choice of books I've read this year. I don't remember the last time a book made me care so much so fast. 30% in I was ready to throw hands when one of them got threatened. My god.

Love this book! The world is fascinating. A great modern fantasy with magic and mystery. 

This was a reread and I loved it all over again.

Rune often uses fire attacks on enemies.

Several years prior to the start of the book Rune’s family estate was attacked. During the attack his father was killed and Rune was tortured and sexually assaulted by 9 people wearing animal masks. This is mentioned a few times in the book mostly very briefly and generally with very few details. However there is a moment towards the end when Rune and Addam are in the Westlands where they are attacked by Rurik in which Rurik casts a spell and briefly makes Rune re-live memories of that event. During this incident Rune is distressed and is getting ready to use a spell that will kill him and everyone around him so that it doesn’t happen again. He is rescued before he does so. Later, at the end when confronting Ashton, Ashton reveals he was one of the masked people who attacked Rune and gives some details of the event to prove he was there.

I keep trying and I just don't like urban fantasy. I feel like this book and pretty much all other UF I've read simultaneously have too much going on and not enough.

The scene that was the final nail in the coffin for me was a good example, I think.

The main character and his bodyguard were at a bar with the kid they're supposed to be taking care of, looking for information. They all order drinks when they walk in. MC wanders off to find the person who supposedly has the information, gets it, everyone's ready to leave. But then we realize the kid is in the corner on a drug trip because the bartender mixed something into his drink. The bartender's reasoning is that the kid is from the (legitimately awful) magic family that got destroyed at the beginning of the book, and fuck those people--except that the bartender also seems to understand that this child was a victim of that family.

There's no reason for him to do it, and the entire scene does nothing but slow the book down; I don't get what we're doing here and I don't really enjoy the opportunity for the bodyguard to commit a little more gratuitous violence (nor do I think it's funny or cute to slip drugs to an abuse victim without their consent!!). Besides these kinds of moments that don't seem to do anything to move the plot, there aren't a lot of spaces to digest what is important, so the entire thing is difficult for me to follow.

There's so much going on that nothing in particular seems important, which seems to be a constant theme with the entire UF genre.

A good read with likeable characters. The mystery is well constructed and the action sequences are well executed.

Really interesting worldbuilding and many plots weaved throughout. The characters were all really unique and intriguing and I liked the range of relationships that were at the forefront of this book. Excited to read the rest of the series. Some of the twists were a bit predictable and the language a bit clunky at times, which is why it's not 5 stars for me
