I chose this book as a short read to pass the time and relax between exams today, and TJR has once again taken my breath away. I have never become so attached to characters in such a short space of time, reading this short story. I have never cried at a short story before, but TJR's words work fantastically in epistolary fiction and dialogue. I would recommend as an introduction to TJR's emotive writing style, because I cannot imagine reading this and remaining objective. It is truly beautiful.

"It is funny the crazy things our brains make up to save us from the truth."

"I’m not quite the man I pretend to be, and she’s certainly not the woman I thought she was."

"I feel like the girl at the party nobody wants to dance with. There I am, hoping someone might choose me, while the rest of the world goes on dancing."

I read this short story on kindle unlimited because of a tiktok and it was my first TJR book. I haven’t read anything as angsty and sob worthy as this book in awhile and it motivated me to read the physical TJR books I have had sitting on my shelf for almost a year now. A million fucking stars bc Carrie and David deserve the world.
SpoilerI’m happy they got their own happy endings but devastated that it wasn’t the ending I was expecting for them together. </spoiler >

oh my god. i loved this. i didn't cry but i got pretty close. this was just such a bittersweet little story told in epistolary format; letters written back and forth between man and a woman whose respective spouses are having an affair with each other. they piece together literal evidence of the affair and develop a special relationship in the process. i just thought this was so well done. i could see it working as a full length novel, but also think it works just fine as a novella. TJR got me again with another banger.
