I've been going through TJR's backlist and thought I'd pick this up and in classic TJR fashion. I enjoyed it. It's pretty short so there wasn't much depth to it, but I still like the characters (David and Carrie). I love how respectful they were toward one another even in the beginning. I'm not sure if this was done deliberately but I noticed as David and Carrie's relationship starts to strengthen, the ending marking to their letters starts to become more affectionate. "All the best, Carrie" turns into "All my love, Carrie". And "Yours, David" turns into "All yours, David". And in the end, they both end their letters with "love" so I thought that was a cute thing that she added.
Spoiler I still don't like the fact that David stayed with his wife. Like I understand, but she was literally willing to run off and marry another man despite being committed to David and bearing four children with him. To me, cheating is just unforgivable and the ultimate sign of disrespect in a relationship. Also, I wonder what David would've done in the end. He doesn't seem like the type of guy that would not want to see his daughter. Guess we'll never know.
Love the Mick Riva and the Daisy Jones & The Six cameos!

I read this short story on kindle unlimited because of a tiktok and it was my first TJR book. I haven’t read anything as angsty and sob worthy as this book in awhile and it motivated me to read the physical TJR books I have had sitting on my shelf for almost a year now. A million fucking stars bc Carrie and David deserve the world.
SpoilerI’m happy they got their own happy endings but devastated that it wasn’t the ending I was expecting for them together. </spoiler >

oh my god. i loved this. i didn't cry but i got pretty close. this was just such a bittersweet little story told in epistolary format; letters written back and forth between man and a woman whose respective spouses are having an affair with each other. they piece together literal evidence of the affair and develop a special relationship in the process. i just thought this was so well done. i could see it working as a full length novel, but also think it works just fine as a novella. TJR got me again with another banger.

This was a great short story and the narration was excellent.  I loved that the entire story was told in letters.  If you are a fan of Reid's novels, you'll find tiny references to those books within the story.
