Als vanouds een heerlijk boek. Ik vind deze serie echt geweldig, en zou hem dan ook telkens weer opnieuw kunnen lezen.

Another great adventure with Ranger Will Treaty and his apprentice Maddie. Since the book ends on a cliff hanger, this is the first half of the larger story of saving Prince Giles.

My favorite of the four Maddie books, it still lacks the depth of Will's stories. When Will visited other countries, he allowed Flanagan to expand Will's world. This allowed for a certain depth to the book. Revisiting Gallica doesn't allow for world building, so we miss some of that depth.

I also don't like Maddie. She has matured, but we aren't in her head as much as we were in Will's. To me she's still that impulsive girl and hasn't seemed to mature much after 3 years of focused training.

So was the old beggar Halt or a spy working for Louis? Is Louis part of the plot to keep Giles away so he could inherit the throne?

Pretty typical plot for this series, but I do want to know what happens with Giles, so I will read on.
