I don't know what it is, but her books ALWAYS make me cry. The material is beautifully written and the characters are completely believable. It deals with difficult Christian issues: forgiveness, repentance, finding peace with God, and abortion. These were all illustrated tastefully and in an excellent manner. Definitely one of the best novels I've read from her (I prefer her stand alone titles to her series anyways!)

The words to describe this book are hard to write. I went in not knowing this book covers the heavy topic of abortion so please be aware before reading. With that being said this book is amazing and makes you think deeply about the pain that comes after an abortion and the healing that needs to happen as well.

I've certainly never read anything like this before. The interplay of relationships, the long-term effects of abortion on both the mother and the father (often ignored) and the requirement for Brad to leave his "offering" on the altar and go immediately to make reparation was quite striking.
Yes, some areas lacked subtlety. Yes, a couple of the characters were less developed than I'd normally like. And yes, Karen Kingsbury faced tricky moments and issues head on.
Laura in particular went through a crisis but I really identified with her reactions and emotions. The importance of openness and honesty, and Karen's own confession at the end that planted the seed for this book really resonated with me, and made me take a hard look at how I might otherwise have acted in the same place.

I wish everyone - including me - had a study group that were so thoughtful and supportive whilst not ignoring Biblical truth in favor of friendship.smashburger's review against another edition

One of my favourite authors is definitely Karen Kingsbury! I had been wanting to read Shades of Blue for quite sometime but hadn't been able to find it in bookstores. Finally I tried the library and got to read it. Shades of Blue had me feeling every emotion I could think of. I loved the story and fell in love with the characters instantly. I also really like how two of the characters in the book were from Karens Forever In Fiction program where people who have touched many lives and have a medical issue are honoured by their love ones by helping Karens Fundraiser and pay to have their loved ones remembered in the beautiful pages of Karens books. I would definitely recommend this book.

3.5 stars. I liked this one a lot, but it did seem to be drawn out a bit. I'm glad they didn't stay together in the end.

I really enjoy Karen's books and this one was just as amazing as the other ones I have read.
This is about a guy named Brad who is in the advertising business and has an amazing fiancée who he is marrying in about 5 weeks. Everything is great till something he is working on brings memories that of his ex girlfriend. Now he has to figure out things with these memories before he could lose the girl he wants to marry.
I really liked the characters and that they have a lot to deal with and figure out. I didn't know that this book would deal with abortion when I picked it up.
I think that Karen handled it well. I think that everything that happened is realistic. I really like her storytelling because I'm always sucked into the story and I have a hard time putting them down.
