Taattua Annie Ernaux’n laatua. Kaunis tarina intohimosta ja sen pyörteisiin joutumisesta. Löysin tästä itsekkin samaistumispintaa hyvin paljon.

Ei ole samanlaista tunnetta kuin intohimoon sukeltaminen. Kaiken näkee selkeästi vasta pinnalle päästyään. Tämä kokeneet sen tietää.

A lyrical essay on the all-consuming kind of love…or better, limerence, and the purpose of writing.

“Sometimes I wonder if the purpose of my writing is to find out whether other people have done or felt the same things or, if not, for them to consider experiencing such things as normal. Maybe I would also like them to live out these very emotions in turn, forgetting that they had once read about them somewhere.”

A brief but impactful memoir about the effect of all-consuming passion on the author’s thoughts and behaviour. Alexa, play “Down Bad” by Taylor Swift.

Yet again, I have found myself blown away by an Annie Ernaux memoir! Simple Passion is a no-holds-barred account of an affair that Ernaux had with an unnamed married man. In many ways, the narrative paints a rather unflattering portrait of Ernaux as her obsession with her lover consumes her every moment. For instance, Ernaux flies to another country just to be able to send him a postcard! And yet, somehow, the ugly details of her affair are refreshing in a voyeuristic way. Loaded with Ernaux's searing signature honesty, Simple Passion is genuinely a masterpiece of self-reflection.
