What I find interesting about this series is that it follows different characters with every book. Where we had Lilac and Tarver with the first book, we have Jubilee and Flynn. Cameo appearances from Lilac and Tarver though, which were perfect. We got to see a bit of what was going on with them and it was a perfect amount to add to the "newbies" of the universe. Lee was such a badass with her no-nonsense attitude and she and Flynn were so sweet together. I also liked the reappearance of the whispers. Their story was pretty great, but a little lackluster.

“You think if you walked out right now, I’d chase you?”
She gazes back at me, her eyes a challenge. “Wouldn’t you?”
“You know I would,” I snap, surrendering. “And I have no idea why that’s such a problem.”
She jerks her arm free and backs up a step until she hits the door. “It’s a problem because I’d let you!” she blurts. Then, after a harsh breath, she murmurs, “It’s a problem because I’d want you to.”
+++5 OUT OF 5 FREAKING STARS!!!
This book is awesome. Absolutely amazing. I love it sooooooooo much. The storyline was gripping and thrilling. The romance was lovely and heartbreaking and sweet and innocent. Gosh! I don't know what to say anymore, just do yourself a favor and pick this baby up!
I loved that little but satisfying peek through Tarver and Lilac's lives. And so damn glad that the next book will star (no pun intended) Sofia, I liked her the minute she appeared in this book. That is why I am beyond excited for Their Fractured Light.

I like this series a lot! I can’t believe it took me this long to pick up the second one. Luckily, I was able to check out the third so I will be reading it immediately. These are exactly what I’m in the mood for!

First of all, my peace-time self always gets jolted when young people are in the roles of Major (last book) and Captain (this book) at the ripe age of 18, but I suppose during non-peace times young people are elevated to these positions very quickly. Okay, that distraction aside--I went into this book having an idea about how Amie Kaufman works so expected some sort of bananas, mind-bending twist. (My prediction before even picking up the book? Someone dies and gets miraculously brought back to life somehow). Also, side note, does Amie Kaufman only co-write books?
I enjoyed this book, but I still prefer the Illuminae series better. Jubilee (Lee) and Flynn were interesting characters. My disappointment was that I didn’t necessarily find the twist or climax all that compelling. Maybe it’s second book blues. I don’t hold it too much against the book since I did enjoy it. 3.5 stars.

Captain Jubilee Chase is known by many as Stone Faced Chase. Her soldiers respect her and she watches out for them, but she refuses to show too much emotion so the nickname doesn’t bother her, too much. Flynn Cormac leads the rebels on Avon and fights on the opposite side of Jubilee. An unfortunate encounter forces Flynn to kidnap Jubilee in the hopes of getting information about a secret base. As they learn more about each other, they find their views aren’t so different and they might be forced to find a side of their own, between the rebels and the military.
Having enjoyed the first book in this series, I really wanted to read this one and I am so glad that I did. I thought this one was even better than the first book.
Jubilee’s wit sucked me in from the moment I started reading. She’s tough as nails and knows how to read people. She’s a strategist. She’s strong on the inside and outside, but she has a trauma from her past that clings to her. I loved seeing her come out of her shell throughout the course of the story.
Flynn was also a great character. Throughout this book, I had times where I wondered how he managed to be the leader of the rebels and then he would open his mouth. He’s a skilled speaker. I really loved that he wanted to find a non-violent way to go about the rebellion.
I didn’t care for the snippets between chapters nearly as much as I did in the first book. They felt a bit too random. Once I got to the end of the book and they tied in closer to the story, I understood why the authors choose this. I still wished it had almost been something else, but they didn’t take away from the book at all.
Lilac and Tarver make an appearance in this book and I really appreciated that the authors didn’t just forget about them. I almost wished they could have had a larger role, but, then again, it wasn’t what this book needed.
The ending was satisfying and just made me want to jump into the next book. Once again, there was the sweet relief that there wasn’t a cliff hanger. Overall, I loved this book.

This book was a solid sequel but not as good as the first book, in my opinion. I enjoyed the characters enough and the plot and I am excited to see how the series wraps up in the next book.
