i need to be real..... im not having fun.
i started reading this as a reading challenge in bookishreality's discord server & i was like "oh maybe after i pass 50% ill be having fun!"
nope.
i have no motivation or care to pick this back up again now that I've passed the halfway mark. i dont care about the count. i don't care. this book drags on so fucking much. did dumas get paid per page or some shit because seriously this book doesn't need to be almost 2k pages long. half of the time dumas is just describing the colour of a fucking brick that a house is built with or something.
some chapters are fun, but honestly they're too few & far between for me to care about them.
also i wanted to finish this because this is literally the one book my grandma has finished in her entire life. i wanted to bond with her about it. she enjoyed it. but i mean she also was born in post WWII serbia in a tiny village. welp, sorry grandma. this book was ass. i get if you had literally nothing else to do but..... its a no from me im afraid

Another book I wept while reading.  Towards the end, there were times I got chills as the long term plotting and manipulations came to fruition.

In a book that is so dark for the majority of its (very numerous) pages, I found the ending to be incredibly hopeful and joyous. Although the romantic in me hoped
that Dantes and Mercedes would end up together
. Surprisingly, I found very little of this book to be superfluous; indeed, it was very satisfying to watch the Count weave his complicated web of revenge. I found myself rooting for unlikely heroes, and marveling at the tangled mess where these characters lives had intertwined. I was also utterly surprised and delighted to see two queer characters who find a happy end in this book! Altogether worth the read, even though it was a long time coming for me.

This book was just about what I expected, if now better! I'm so happy I was finally able to read it fully. It is an abridged version so I can't help but to wonder if there isn't something missing or far too altered that could have made me give this an even higher rating. Because of this I really want to read the unabridged version. Still, this was a monumental read in so many ways and now that I finished it I can't help but to feel sad.
