Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble is one of the significant critical academic works for contemporary feminist theory. Butler argues against the binary lines set for gender and desire, arguing that gender and desire are flexible. She sets an interesting logic of dismantling Lacans study that “female homosexuality issues from a disappointed heterosexuality…” and poses the question that equally “clear to the observer that heterosexuality issues from a disappointed homosexuality?”. Whilst Butler’s work into the study of gender has been called revolutionary and has laid foundation to queer theory, it is exactly that: a foundation. Written in 1990, there have been numerous texts that explored and expanded Bulters theories, for example Judith Halberstam work Female masculinity where she explores lesbian masculinity and desire. Butler's work seems to be intended for the Academic world, however whilst it can used for Queer theory it doesn’t interact with the LGBT spectrum, as her interaction with Intersex and Transgender can be argued to be clumsy. Butler’s work can be argued to be dense which makes the theories hard to understand. It laid a foundation for my research, however I will not be relying on the text as it only marginalizes my topic.
