A group of misfits find themselves thrown together by circumstance in the dangerous, complex place that is Lagos. The best character in this novel is Lagos and the character we get to know best is the complex Minister of Education. The weaving of loyalties and circumstances is a thing of beauty.

"Q: What do you call an honest Lagosian?
A: Dead.   -riddles and jokes page, Nigerian Journal"
(pg.114)

Definitely worth the read! Surprisingly wholesome at times as the characters turn from wary strangers to found family. Each coming from harsh pasts, they join together to fend against government corruption and classism in Lagos. The harsh realities within the city juxtaposed with deadpan humor and matter-of-fact wit made for great laugh-out-loud moments.
I found at times (especially at the very beginning and the end of the book) that the characters were trapped within the plot's needs and progression despite their own character motivations, but despite that there were many memorable parts that make me recommend this book, especially to fans of ensemble casts in stories!
