Fine mystery until the very end.
the final reveal with the therapist and the daughter recounting the abuse felt gratuitous and almost stopped me from finishing.

Slow-paced then the last few chapters are horrific. It's hard to warm up to the main characters. Still, I'm curious how Lynly and Havers grow to work together in later books.

Intense fatphobia throughout. And the author spends way too much time on the trauma experienced by certain characters, to the point where it feels like she's just sensationalizing something unspeakable.

Two thumbs WAY down. Bad things happen in this world, so its no surprise that examples will be found in our fiction. This keeps our stories relevant. However, I don't find it entertaining when the author brings me into the room to watch abuse in progress. Any plot can progress without the vulgar details that this author chose to include. This is an American author that grew up in California, but she was trying to write about a Scotland Yard investigation in England.

A Great Deliverance is the first of 21 books in the Inspector Lynley (and DS Havers) series. The book opens with the discovery of William Teys decapitated in his barn. Beneath him, is his dog, Whiskers, also dead. Sitting beside Teys is his daughter Roberta, who immediately confesses to the murder. The New Scotland Yard sends Inspector Thomas Lynley, Eighth Earl of Asherton, and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers to the village of Keldale in Yorkshire to investigate. They soon discover that Roberta’s mother, Tessa, and her older sister, Gillian, are missing, along with the mystery of a dead infant found by the ruins of Keldale Abbey. Elizabeth George writes an intricately constructed mystery.
