This book is more action-focused than the previous book I read from this author, which made it a bit harder for me to get into it. However, I love how this more fast paced, dystopian action is used to discuss heavy topics and character development in a more natural way.

Queer, trans Appalachian teen turning into a monster to defeat the religious trauma he was raised with? Absolutely yes, in every way <3 The pacing was a little uneven and some of the gory parts were quite literally nauseating but that's the only things that altered my rating. Overall, an incredible debut!

This story is about a post apocalyptic world where a cult calling themselves Angels has wiped out most of the population. It explores the journey of Benji, a young trans boy who escaped the cult. The themes and characters feels very real, and the story feels very personal to the author.
