Yessss these are the vibes I'm looking for. So atmospheric and moody. But the writing is also very strong and the characters are really well fleshed out. I felt like I was right there in a cold and dark chateau trying not to let the dark make me paranoid.

I lost interest when I realized that the Institute was not going to be the protagonist for the rest of the story, and according to reviews I looked into they become the antagonist. The synopsis feels misleading to me now considering I wanted to read the story that was promised to me there. The first third of the book is so fun and interesting, and I would have loved to read a whole novel with that concept. Alas.

A deeply weird and odd book with a complex, haphazard narration and sliding perspectives, all somehow within a singular character. Not an easy read by any means, but never pretentious or self gratifying. I liked it.
