Fablehaven is one of those books that start off shaky but eventually comes through in the middle to the end. I'm glad I made it to the end because it really got better (the story line and the fantasy) and Kendra (the main character) was more likeable.
I had problems in the beginning mainly with the characters, especially Seth (Kendra's younger brother), he was annoying and kept breaking rule after rule and disobeying his grandfather.

This book came out of nowhere and surprised me in the best way - I loved everything about it! Every element was so magical, varied, and delightful, and the characters felt believable in the way they interacted with each new element. Plot-wise, the action came as a huge surprise, but it was a lot of fun. I'm so pleased to have ended the year with this book.

I was SO READY to do away with one of the characters myself, because the person is so well-written and annoying. I loved that each character was able to develop alongside an action-packed plot; there was so much to enjoy. Given the bounds of the world, nothing felt too convenient to me, either, which is a huge plus. I could maybe argue that a few of the scenes didn't advance the plot much, but the world-building and character moments made me enjoy them anyway. The book stands alone well but has me very intrigued to continue the series. I'm so excited.

Only a few issues I saw - describing people as obese (not a word I personally prefer) and a few (I think three) brief descriptors of someone being Asian or exotic in a way that felt "othering". Content warning for non-consensual kissing and brief, intentional animal harm that both are for the greater good. Thankfully, it was all over quickly and was not a repeated point.

I really enjoyed this book. Great, child-friendly storyline--but interesting enough that I liked it too! This isn't my favorite on in the series, because it's Brandon Mull's first book, and the writing could have a been a little better. At one point, I felt like it was dragging a bit. However, the books just get better as they go! I'd recommend this to any fantasy lover. I love it! =D

I borrowed this from the library to see if it would be something my nephew would be interested in, but I did not enjoy it so I won't be recommending it to him. (He read the synopsis on the back, but didn't ask about it so it's fair to say he wasn't interested). This book was slow. But, it might just have seemed slow because I kept putting it down because Seth is the most irritating character I have encountered in a while. I get that he's a child, but he doesn't listen. Every problem that occurred in this book is directly related to Seth NOT following directions. A fairy preserve is an interesting idea, one I should have liked, but I just could not. I will not be reading any more of this series.
