The first novel-length book, but the second story in the series.
I actually loved this second installment of the story. It started out where the story in the anthology left off and throws you right into it.

It sometimes is a little confusing to follow the emotional part of the story, at least in the beginning.

Still, the story is just great!!

Definitely recommend reading the Alpha & Omega novella first, which I DID do and I’m so thankful because even WITH reading that, I was thrown into a world of me not knowing shit but it was expected of me. I guess reading the Mercy Thompson series first MIGHT fix that, as there’s characters in this, that are in that, and that series started first? But honestly, I felt like I was meant to know who half these people are.

I don’t really think this book was any good until past the halfway mark. Mainly because it’s showing all the characters and explaining all that crap. I just felt like I wasn’t told stuff properly or something. Like when you read a spin off and it’s assumed you’ve already met people so they give a glossed version and if you only started there then everyone seems two dimensional and boring?

It also had more of a PNR feel than UF, and I went into this thinking I wouldn’t like it all that much as I don’t tend to love UF, and then I was kinda disappointed I guess because the romance part was everywhere and nowhere at the same time and all the action at the end was much more interesting than these two wondering why the mating bond isn’t happening straight away.

I felt her trauma wasn’t REALLY talked about except in passing here. I felt he would still feel rage over what happened to her and the conditions she was in. I just felt it lacked some of that dramatic animal emotion because everyone wanted to not blow up ever.

Overall I do think the writing was good, I am tempted to read another in this series, and now I’m not so scared to try Mercy’s series either. Whether I read all of these books I don’t know as I don’t tend to read books with the same couples etc but we shall see.

I do not think there are enough indigenous love stories/books and although I enjoyed this book that almost made me tear up I do wish Charles, the dominant wolf mated to Anna, was mated to another indigenous woman as well. There are mentions of sexual assault, rape, and abuse. It also feels weird that this is considered the first book when such a big part (the three years) of Anna's werewolf life is missing. Even blue jay woman, Charles mother, was dead and that felt like a missed opportunity for indigenous representation. Overall the power of the omega touched me. I feel like I relate a lot to the omega who cannot be controlled is neither dominant nor submissive but is a perfect balance of it and able to calm the people... able to help others sleep simply by being. The bond needing trust and truth is so vital. The storylines intertwining with witch, human, wolf, and "monsters" was done well. If I am able to read the prequel or 2nd book I am hoping that it is as good or better. I do have to remmeber this is a 2008 book so the misogny is tied more to the wolf identity especially in regards to the masculine and feminie energy. Also this book is written by a white woman so I keep that in mind when it comes to the indigenous representation. Well, I read this because of so many raving reviews from people I usually share a taste in books with. But, I have same issues than with the Mercy Thompson books. I did like this one better, but the whole werewolf pack thing really annoys me and also the fact that the heroine doesn't have any friends. In this book it made more sense, but still. I don't like romances where the hero is/will be the heroine's whole life, because she really had none before.

The writing was good and there was a plot, but I actually was more interested in the lives of Bran and Asil than the main couple. Maybe that's not such a good thing either... It was decent, but I don't think I will be continuing with this series. Too many urban fantasy tropes I have issues with.

I suspect that this series will become my go to for werewolf entertainment.

I honestly did enjoy this. One major flaw is that I thought this was the first in the series… but realized quickly that it was way to confusing and had to go back to read Alpha and Omega. Then it made so much more sense lol. This book wasn’t what I expected and there were points that did frustrate me but overall the plot and characters were so interesting I had a good time. Solid 3.75 read for me.
