Loved the relationship development here and the fmc inner voice was so perfectly messy. There were a few weight comments I side-eyed but only in the fmc’s head.

I have mixed feelings about Maddie, but overall, she's the fierce older sister who won't sit back and take bullshit from anyone and I can dig that. Her self-victimization gets jaded over time, though. Hassen is just a lonely guy who wants to have companion. Doesn't excuse his actions in the previous book, though.

This is probably one of my least favorite couples (I just find it hard to relate to people who want to be f*** buddies like Maddie was insistent on), but I still am glad to have read this one because around the half way point some major things happen to the tribe. If you care about continuity and overall plot with the tribe, you should read this one.

I have to say I really didn't like all the self fat shaming that Maddie did either.

One of my favourites just because of how great the spice scenes are. However, I was a bit uncomfortable about how Maddie's weight is described throughout.

We finally get a human female character that doesn't have a "perfect bod" and she's described as a "hurricane", "a lot", pushy, obsessed with "cheese and French fries", refers to herself as "out of shape" & her "fat ass", and overall a crusty, miserable, bitchy character. It took a a near death experience for her to have an ounce of character development at all. So disappointed.

Not to mention the problematic relationship between Maddie and Lilah.. As if a deaf person has no autonomy or independence whatsoever simply because they are deaf and need some kind of hero big sister to control and do everything for her. And her being salty when her sister finds some happiness?

1 whole star only for the voyeurism and Hassen's dirty talk abilities, that shit was hot.

After the way Hassan acted in Barbarian’s Touch, I was curious how things would work out in this book. Not to mention Maddie was depicted as a very difficult person. I love how their outcast status brought them together; Hassan being literally exiled and Maddie having made a bad first impression.

Having both a younger and an older sister myself, I can somewhat understand Maddie’s attitude when she first came to the tribe. She was shocked about where she was, introduced to actual aliens, and her sister was abducted. Of course, she was unreasonable and had a volatile temper when she felt nothing was being done to help her. It doesn’t seem the tribe has forgotten her attitude now that it’s all worked out so they keep her at arm’s length. Hassan was left with no family when illness swept through the tribe before the humans arrived. Being exiled leaves him even lonelier and makes him feel like an outsider.

I love the friendship Hassan and Maddie forge before they resonate. There’s no mistaking that they fall in love rather than have their resonating decide for them. It’s a wonderful pairing.

The one thing that bothered me and could be upsetting to some readers is the body image issues Maddie has. It’s very clear that Hassan and the others think nothing of Maddie’s weight or body but she sure does. I understand what the author was trying to do, but it was a bit much at times.

I *loved* Maddie and Hassen. I saw Maddie getting some hate in other reviews, but I love that she seemed pretty realistic for a modern woman stuck in this situation. I loved Hassen’s sensitivity, and the overall theme of growing since past mistakes.
The spice was great in this one as well, I loved how much Maddie took the lead. There was also so much additional plot with the rest of the tribe and their planet, and I really enjoyed that!! Definitely one of my favorites in the series so far.

Spice, Suspense, Shifts in the Tribe

Wow, this story and the last have been so good and a solid mix of spicy with story and character development. I love how Ruby consistently develops new couples who are distinct and very nuanced with sex scenes that build on their character and grow as individuals through their experiences. Also so much change and story about this community happening here I was riveted to the story on the edge of my seat in a way I have not been before. It was an emotional ride more than usual as this far in you really feel like you have gotten to know folks. I really appreciated too how with Maddie/Hassen and the alternating POV you quickly see how often individuals are struggling with internalized self hate about aspects of themselves and project that onto everyone around them even when you can see those around them are not thinking the same way. This came up in the last book but not to the same degree as Maddie and I thought this was interesting. I also really enjoyed the personalities and dynamic with Maddie and Hassen. It is funny but I notice that honestly the further into the series I get the less and less I like Georgie/Vektal. Which again I enjoy how you feel so different the longer you are around folks in story and meet new people. I love this aspect of staying in a world and in no means think they are unsympathetic but I am grateful they were the first couple. Also I do recommend getting or borrowing the ebook versions of the stories because the author always has interesting notes about her process writing the books and explanations and reviews of all the characters and their relationships which are helpful. I am going through the reading list from the author's website which I recommend if folks are enjoying the series. Narration is great as always.
