What a wonderful little gem - particularly for Spanish speakers/readers. This book is brimming with GGM's best: a colourful and deep understanding of the *Colonised-Latin-America vibes*, historically rich world building and sincere yet completely unreal characters, (crazy forms of) love, pain, magic and hate... all while just writing an overall incredibly creative and fun (to read!) story.

Marques’ mastery of language shines here, even in translation. My first introduction into his work, and hopefully not my last. The prologue is the strongest part, but still an enjoyable, clever whole

The “love story” at the heart of this novel is too disturbing to appreciate its merits.

WHAT WAS THAT.
okay i understand the historical context. márquez greatly does his job in describing it.
and yes. this book is truly disturbing.
i was completely shocked by the plot. R*pe of a 12 y.o. girl by a 30-something y.o. man? absolutely disgusting even with historical context. and the death of this poor child…
. BUT every well-written disturbing book has the reason to be that disturbing. here… religious bigotry, yes. but what about that?
this book didn‘t give me enough explanations (yes, you can call me dummy, but they were truly needed here) to really form something in my head. i just felt uneasy and really bad for this little girl. that‘s it…
