I found these short stories to be more character sketches than stories. Tension is generally provided by some sexual behaviour that is unfortunately less shocking to the audience than the author seems to believe. After each story, I shrugged and put down the book. It took three weeks of occasionally picking it up before I admitted I wasn't going to finish it.
