My Scottish best friend and fellow corvid enthusiast sent me this book for Christmas and I wish it hadn’t taken me so long to get around to reading it. It’s really beautiful and tender. The writing is superb — so detailed, so tender, occasionally deeply moving, and other times very funny. Some of the sentences were so complicated that it forced me to slow down a bit to grok their meaning (and I say that as an editor with 25 years in the game), which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I fell deeply in love with the author’s cast of characters, especially the birds, and including the author. She was so curious about everything as a person, a trait I admire and enjoy greatly. I learned a tremendous amount from this memoir, and have even integrated some of the lessons she learned from living with corvids with my own wild sky puppies, my beloved American crows. Truly a great reading experience.

I liked the reflections drawn from the author's reading and reflection on h life with her rook, but wasn't sure she answered her (own) challenge about keeping a wild bird with its wings clipped. Some really engaging anecdotes, some good info conveyed alongside - but...

Brilliant book for bird lovers a great insight to. Crows and ravens and learned magpies aren't what people make out them to be. Great read.

Brilliant description of a life with birds, I became quite fond of her bird family and their habits. I learnt loads about forbids particularly but also birds in general. It also made me want to visit Aberdeen and buy a good mac.

A really enjoyable gentle read filled with natural history information, interesting observation and personal anecdote. I took a while to read it, not because it was dull, just because it was one of those books it was easy to pick up and leave for a bit while reading other things. A really enjoyable read that I will pick up again and dip back into.
