I've always heard great things about this book and I couldn't wait to read it: this year, I finally found it at the bookstore. Although I read it a few weeks after Christmas, I loved it. The idea that a father, wrote letters to his children like if they were coming from Santa is very beautiful and sweet. The fact that the arrival of these letters later became a tradition in the Tolkien family, makes this book even more special. It is a perfect gift for children but it's also a book that every book lover have to own in its bookshelf in order to read it every year during the Christmas' Holidays.
Ho sempre sentito parlare benissimo di questo libro e non vedevo l'ora di leggerlo: finalmente quest'anno sono riuscita a trovarlo in libreria. Nonostante l'abbia letto qualche settimana dopo Natale, mi è piaciuto molto. L'idea che un padre, scriva delle lettere ai propri figli come se arrivassero da Babbo Natale è molto bella e dolce. Il fatto che l'arrivo di queste lettere sia poi diventata una tradizione nella famiglia Tolkien, rende questo libro ancora più speciale. È un regalo perfetto per i bambini ma è anche un libro che ogni amante dei libri dovrebbe avere nella sua libreria in modo da rileggerlo ogni anno nel periodo natalizio.

Not my first read, but it appears to have been long ago. Sweet, fun, a record of difficult depression and war times, as well as parents experiencing their kids growing up.

Listening to the soundtrack at the beginning and between each letter is a masochistic exercise. I also didn’t find the letters particularly interesting (maybe it would be different of I were a child or a parent).

Tolkien is a masterful genius.
What a sweet way to chronically record Christmas through the lives of his children. I mean, I would have been SO excited to get these letters as a kid (and as an adult), but also these letters are real. He mingles fantasy and reality so well. You get a sense of the time period and what happened through out the year.
Such a special thing for his future family (and us readers) to witness.
