My second Jeph Loeb Tim sale book about Batman, hmmmmm what do we have here. Oh 3 short stories about batsie. Cool.

Batman haunted knight - haunted knight is a collection of 3 short stories you could say, one being about scarecrow, one being about mad hatter and commissioner Gordon and the last being about penguin and batman finding out how in the future when he dies no one will care and the name Batman in the future will be useless to everyone.

My thoughts (the good and bad) - the first story with scarecrow was good, the second one with mad hatter shows you the struggle of being a parent mostly in the eyes of Jim Gordon which I really enjoyed and the last about Bruce Wayne finding out that in the future he will be forgotten. I’m still getting used to Tim sales art but it’s overall pretty good, and the stories in this are pretty good. My problem was that sometimes during the stories I wouldn’t get attached and wouldn’t care. I also thought the scarecrow one was a bit boring but Jillian made it better.

Overall good book

it’s three little stories, and i liked some better than others. i enjoyed the style, and i liked that it was a compilation of random stories that don’t relate to each other. not much to say other than i found it in a cool comic book store and enjoyed it. july 2023

I'm a huge fan of the Loeb/Sale Batmans. Definitely my favorites for the character!

Three one-shots based around Hallowe'en in Gotham.

The first, 'Fears', is the strongest in my view, perhaps because it's a bit longer and given more time to flesh out its plot.

The second, 'Madness', features The Mad Hatter and gives us some insight into Bruce Wayne's past.

The final one, 'Ghosts', is a take on 'A Christmas Carol', but feels rushed and a little constrained by the three-ghost format.

Overall, though, it's a good collection and good to see what the duo of Loeb and Sale got up to before their longer journeys into Gotham.

A few years ago, I made a chronology for how to read modern Batman. I was focused quite a bit on creating the order, as opposed to just reading the books for enjoyment, so now I'm going back to see how the chronology holds up.

The first and, by far, the weakest of the [a:Jeph Loeb|32594|Jeph Loeb|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1214852516p2/32594.jpg]/[a:Tim Sale|61388|Tim Sale|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] Batman books is still pretty good. I'm pushing it out of the continuity because it's just kind of okay, and there are plenty of better Batbooks to put in there, but if I were going to put in the chronology, I stand by my original assessment that you should read the stories in the reverse order.

The stories, themselves are very flat. The final story is a reimagining of A Christmas Carol, which has been a cliche for much longer than I've been alive, a story about kidnapping a young girl (in this case, Barbara Gordon) centered around Alice In Wonderland lore (also cliche before I was born), and a forgettable Scarecrow story.

The art by Tim Sale is great, as always, but the existence of [b:Batman: The Long Halloween|36303994|Batman The Long Halloween|Jeph Loeb|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1506370728s/36303994.jpg|57972635] and [b:Batman: Dark Victory|106076|Batman Dark Victory|Jeph Loeb|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1327940341s/106076.jpg|1399464] makes this volume completely skippable.

I recommend this for Batman completists, people desperate for an early Penguin story, and fans of trite literary references in superhero comics. And also fans of Tim Sales art, the book still looks great.
