Blaze Erupting was such a wonderful read and I absolutely adored it! It was phenomenal getting this little snippet into this world again. I also was so intrigued by the set up of the story which looks like it takes place chronically at the beginning or towards the beginning when Scorpius was first released and they had to deal with the beginning fallout. i really enjoyed this novella and I definitely want to read more of these 1001 Dark Night books.

Fans of this author and most especially this series will get a kick out of this one here. I actually adored seeing it all come together. I was really fascinated in seeing this story. I have really loved this book and this whole world that this author has created actually. Its so fascinating and its one of my favorite dystopian worlds that I have ever created. There is a great level of suspense and mysterious intrigue that is layered throughout the story. Now the romance is steam packed and I adored it. If you are a fan of alpha males, then this hero is really going to work for you. He is so badass and I love how he is with the heroine and her friends. He is so easy going in certain scenarios and its pretty funny actually all the bantering that happens even when they think he is the enemy.

Overall I found Blaze Erupting to be a stunning addition to a action packed series that just delivers all the way!

Scorpios Syndrome is a favorite series. I really love this world that Rebecca Zanetti has created. If you’re not familiar with this world, there is a bacteria that is killing people. Some people survive after contracting Scorpios, but many don’t. The ones that survive are sometimes different. There are people anywhere from just becoming psychopaths others really losing their minds and don’t even act human anymore.

In this novella, we spend some time with a different group than we have been in the full-length books. It also takes place earlier in the series. So you can read this book without knowing anything about this series.

Here we have Hugh and Ellie. They were a couple years ago in school, but it has been ten years since they were together. Now, Hugh works to keep America’s nuclear plants safe from terrorist. Ellie is a computer genius working. Ellie is currently working with the Brigade, “which is the USA’s first line of defense against all things Scorpius”. Now Hugh is working there too. He knows the best ways to protect those plants. They want to keep them up and running and more importantly, keep terrorist from blowing them up and radiating the countryside.

However, because of some undercover work that is classified, Hugh isn’t trusted by the team. But they are trusting him a bit, because no one knows more about these plants and the terrorists that might target them than Hugh.

This is a nice second chance romance (not a trope I love, but I don’t mind it. I know some people love it). There is also a great suspense story. It is a great introduction to this series that I really love.

Her heart started to beat faster. This was the worst time in the entire timeline of humanity to start a real romance. Well, except during the plague. No. Scratch that. This was worse. Especially since she now had a beyond dangerous job, and he seemed hell-bent on protecting her. There was no protection these days.
There was a whole lot of planning and even more luck. That was it. “You need to take a breath.”
His grin was oddly determined. A little intimidating. How strange. Especially since the look he gave her sent little tingles through her entire lower body.
“I’m breathing just fine, baby. I understand you’re scared,” he said.
“I’m not scared,” she retorted like any eight-year-old challenged on the playground. She cleared her throat, trying to look like an adult, damn it. “I’m just being realistic.”
“I’m not gonna hurt you, Ellie Mae,” he said, his voice gentle. “Not you. Feel free to fall hard.”
She blinked. Once and then twice. Was that arrogant? She mulled it over, watching his implacable face. Wait a minute. Hell yes, that was arrogance. “While I like confidence as much as the next girl, give me a break. You’re not that irresistible.” Yeah, right. She was getting better at this whole lying thing, though.
He pressed his lips together, and it took her a second to realize he was trying not to chuckle.

3 stars - I liked it

This novella jumps back to the beginning of the Scorpius outbreak. The Brigade is gathering people to help assess threats and hopefully prevent any widespread disasters. They recruit Hugh Johnson to be an analyst for security threats involving nuclear power. But, some events in Hugh’s past prevent the Brigade members from trusting him completely, except for his college friend Eleanor, who helped recruit him.

Hugh and Eleanor’s relationship was very fast paced. They knew each other in college and they had the hots for each other then, but Hugh was a bit of a man whore so he didn’t push after she said no initially, also he didn’t want to ruin their friendship. These two had a very intense, fast paced, and emotion filled romance. In between falling for each other they were dealing with the threat of nuclear disasters and crazy Scorpius survivors.

Overall, this was a good novella and I liked learning more about the Brigade. I do hope we get to see more of them in the series soon though because I want to know what they have been dealing with. And I want to check in with our original couple, Deke and Nora.

It’s interesting to me to get these peeks into how everything started with Scorpius. Little side stories that don’t involve the full on shit-storm the main storyline characters are dealing with now that Scorpius has taken root and decimated the country and possibly the world. We hear quite a bit about the Brigade, but as of yet have not seen them in the “after times”. This is another novella giving the reader more information on where they may be and what they may be doing. My hope, of course, is that the groups in California will eventually have contact with the Brigade so friends can be reunited and lives can be saved.

This story takes place after Scorpius has started to spread and things are dire, but before the country’s power systems have been knocked offline. Before the president has succumbed to the disease and the power hungry, Scorpius infected, megalomaniac took over as president. Ellie is working for the government and, although isn’t super trusting, is still not as cynical as Hugh. Ellie and Hugh were great friends in college and this is a second-chance romance for them. And boy does their chemistry burn! (pun intended) Hugh is a bit of a mystery. Is he really an everyday blue-collar middle-class guy, or is he hiding something? Is he friend or foe? Ellie trusts Hugh even though they haven’t seen each other in a very long time. She just knows he’s the man for the job they need doing and that he’ll help. The question is, is Ellie right to put so much faith in someone she hasn’t seen in years?

This is a short, hot, and intense story. There is a lot of back and forth on the trust issue that the couple is trying to sort while also racing against time to stop a nuclear meltdown. All while the world is crumbling around them. Until I finish this series I won’t know if it’s a necessary cog in the overall story, most likely not. But it’s a lot of fun and, like I said, an interesting peek at the beginning.

Good short read with my favorite Scot, Deacon McDougal, leading a group to stop stupid people from making even more trouble while the plague spreads. Ellie Mae and Hugh had a past but he spurned her the one time she'd been brave enough to let him know. A decade later he was the man she knew that could help with the nuclear problem brought about by Scorpios spreading across the country. Good update on the team that has been missing but talked about in the books since book 2. Ready for more with Damon Winters up next.

Wow, loved this story! It did go back to the near beginning of Scorpius, but that was so great, because it meant we got to see the couple of the first story in the series! Really great, need to read more!

A nice novella and we finally see more of the Brigade!
I can't wait until Deke and Nora reunites with the main series... I know it will happen sooner or later!

This is a quick little read. I was very interested in learning more about The Brigade. Hugh and Eleanor were very cute and hot. This novella was such a quick read and works well with the rest of the Scorpius world. I hope we can see more of the Brigade.
