You know those books that you just know will hold a special place in your heart forever? Well, this is definitely one of those.

Thrown right in at the deep end, this story starts with our protagonist vividly and graphically describing the car crash that landed him in the hospital burns unit battling for his life. He swerved to avoid arrows shooting in his direction from the forest nearby, but that surely was a hallucination caused by fear and a pain worse than death. A mysterious woman starts to visit him, sharing tales from her 700-year-long past that he knows to be some symptom of her mental illness. For what else could she be but unwell and drowning in her own illusions?

This book drew me in from the word go. The way Davidson writes is pure poetry and brilliant humour and I felt every word on the page. A unique tale brimming with religious imagery, intense love and hope with some really dark themes, this was everything I could have hoped for. An easy 5 ⭐️!
