I understand that this is one of Follett's most beloved works. It is a densely packed work spanning several decades; the plot is nicely interwoven with historical elements and makes one reflect on power structures and injustices that in some form persist to this day. I honestly loved most of the characters and the way the flaws of even the "good" characters reflect in the story. Follett makes sure to create a strong female protagonist, which I love. She seems believable and strong and wields power in ways realistic for the era.

The description of women and sex scenes are a quite male gaze-y though (as is usually the case in Follett's work) and the ending comes a little abrupt and too neatly, as if he really wanted to finish after 1000 pages.

Wow. What a book. This is probably one of the densest books Iā€™ve ever read. I canā€™t even imagine writing this epic story - it was enough just to read it!

I was very skeptical about reading a book set in the 12th century. Could it possibly be interesting?! Well yes, of course it could be! Turns out 12th century stories provide an endless amount of drama, romance, and adventure. I learned quite a lot of history I otherwise never would have known. Plus, the underlying message of Christianity was quite impressive - intentional or not.

Critically speaking, this book couldā€™ve been shorter. Some of the drama felt a bit repetitive. Like really, the town is going to get burned down again?! But that also just contributes to the epic nature of this book so Iā€™m OK with it overall.

Favorite character by far is Aliena. What a woman!

Favorite quote was on page 295. Philip is talking to Tom Builder. ā€œā€¦God demands the best we have to offer, that which is most precious to us. Is this design the best thing you could offer God?ā€ ā€¦ ā€œThen rest easy. God will accept it.ā€

It can be hard to tell the difference between an authorā€™s thoughts and a characterā€™s thoughts. Iā€™m still not entirely sure when a hypersexual thought came from Follett or when it came fromĀ
Tom, or William
. The first half of this book had me unsure, reading through the atrocities ofĀ
William Hamleigh
Ā  in graphic detail, and the sexual emphasis placed onĀ
Ellen.
Ā  However, by the second half it had gone above and beyond. Iā€™m sure it isnā€™t perfect, but it is a monumental effort and execution. 8.5/10.Ā

I was wary of this book despite a glowing recommendation as it was longer than anything I've read in years, so I put on a 10-hour Youtube video of medieval-sounding music and braced myself for a long slog. I needn't have worried - I was hooked from the prologue. I found the characters were easy to become familiar with, and whether they were drawn as 'good' or 'bad' archetypes or somewhere in between, their motivations were pretty consistent. I particularly enjoyed the self-assuredness of many of the female characters, and how much smarter than most of the men they are! Like other reviewers, I did find some of the graphic scenes of rape difficult to read, though they certainly serve to make the 'villains' utterly detestable. The plot is tightly woven - the ending ties up loose threads across the numerous characters' storylines. The amount of description was sufficient to establish a sense of place without needing to describe every feature, the pacing was good - I never found myself bored, even in the more sedate sections of the books - and the building of tension before more climactic events was masterful - I frequently found myself wanting to cheat and flick forward a few pages to know what would happen to the characters. The positioning of characters in the book at big historical events allowed these events to be conveyed with more immediacy, rather than always relying on hearing from messengers. I think it also helped to highlight the events at Kingsbridge and the trials of the characters there as a microcosm of the turbulent time it is set in, rather than being singularly exciting individuals. The central fixture of cathedral-building was also a nice insight into the developing architecture of the time. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and will certainly read the sequel soon to find out what happens to Kingsbridge next!
