the writing style here felt a lot like a y/a book, but all of the messages still rang true. lots of (unfortunately) extremely relevant messages about fascism and complicity, women's autonomy or lack thereof, oppression, resistance, etc. there were definitely a lot of loose ends left at the end that i would have liked to have seen get tied up, but leaving some of them open actually did make a lot of sense plot-wise. not a bad read by any means, but i didn't love the writing style and the on-the-nose explicitness of some of the ideas.

This book was a hard one for me to listen to. The Chaperone take place in a world where America is split in two the new and the old. In new America things has gone back in time where women has basically little to no rights. and in this world is where we find our main character and I'm telling you reading about this world and the lies they tell the girls in this world just kind of made me not want to read this book but that a personal thing the writing was good and the story over all was good as well just a book that really wasn't for me personally over all with that said I'd give it 2.5 stars.

Awesome! A lot like the The Handmaid's Tale, but way more YA. About New America, about the girls there who have zero choices, about a girl who is learning more about the world thanks to her Chaperone and figures out to stand up for herself... to get away from it all. It was really well written and I love that the book had short chapters. The MC was such a great character to follow and you just want to root for her! I loved it when we got in the normal America and our MC found out all the truths. All the horrible truths. While I was a bit on the fence about her decision there I could also understand it. She is doing this for all the girls in New America, including her youngest sister. There were quite a few interesting and awesome twists and boy I loved each one. It was well-written and I would recommend this one to all!

I picked up an advanced copy at NCTE and my students ripped it from my hands before I could read it. I couldn't keep this on the shelf with 3 students reading the entire book in a day. So, I had to get a copy for me from NetGalley to see what it was all about. I get it. I get why they are enthralled with it.

Students love the struggle for power and control in society and the action of the story.

It's a little bit like The Handmaid's Tale and The Grace Year.

I loved the premise, but I found myself wanting more depth in both character and world building. There were also in several incongruities that took me out of the story.

The last 100 pages were absolutely unnecessary, could’ve been 50 pages tops for the ending. It was an interesting concept but I feel as though it was a little bit out there. Average dystopian book.
